June 3, 2021
The Mass Casualty Commission learned that audio recordings of 911 calls from the events of April 18 and 19, 2020, had been published by a local magazine. The Commission condemns the access and posting of the highly sensitive audio recordings posted yesterday evening.
The Commission does not support the publication of these recordings and requests that the magazine remove the content immediately. We are extremely concerned for the privacy of those affected by the content, especially the child.
We understand that this is extremely difficult for many people and the content can be re-traumatizing. If anyone requires crisis supports, please contact the Provincial Telephone Crisis Line at 1-888-429-8167. This line is confidential, available 24/7 and is staffed by trained mental health clinicians.
Please know that the Commission is committed to approaching all our work with a trauma-informed way and will always ensure any highly sensitive information gathered to inform our investigations is secure and shared in a responsible, and trauma-informed way.
As always, if you have any questions, please contact our Community Liaison Director Maureen Wheller (Maureen.Wheller@masscasualtycommission.ca) or call us at 1-833-635-2501.
Respectfully,
The Mass Casualty Commission
Hon. J. Michael MacDonald, Chair
